Subject: DISINFECTANT: A TOAST (PART I OF III)
To John Norstad and everyone else who has helped to write and maintain
Disinfectant:
I wanted to publicly acknowledge your work, and to thank you for all you've
done with Disinfectant since you first jumped into the fray. So, I sent the
following letter to the Info-Mac bulletin board, at Stanford.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
>I've been thinking lately about the Macintosh virus protection freeware
>program Disinfectant; you know, for all the work that has been done developing
>and updating that program, I've never seen anything publicly thanking John
>Norstad and company for all their effort. I had the occasion to contact John
>once, and was pleasantly surprised at the quick, concise and very friendly
>answer.
> So with that in mind, I would like to propose a sort of internet-toast to
>John Norstad. If you use Disinfectant, have been saved from certain hard
>drive hell by its use, if you've appreciated the fact that it's the best virus
>program out there, and free besides, if you've contacted John and received a
>courteous reply, or if you just have something nice to say about him, then do
>the following:
>
>Send to MY address a BRIEF message thanking him (or anyone else who has
>helped) for his work. Please include your email address in the text of the
>message.
>
>For my part, I will wait no more than ONE week and send to John a compilation
>of all of those messages. The text of your message will be included (it
>better be printable. No flames, please). I will also send a copy to
>Info-mac, so we can PUBLICLY let him know he's appreciated. If it ain't nice,
>don't expect to see it included. This is a THANK YOU only.
> Please don't flood HIS mailbox; I'm offering to do the work so he won't
>have to wade thru a ton of email.
>
>Come on, folks; I hope I can get at least 50 messages. Let's do it!
>
>Brandon Munday

... and I received the following messages in reply. I have compiled them and
offer this community "Thank You" from all of us on Info-Mac for your work.
=========================Thanks, John et al!===============================
(Messages 1-35 of 78; Part II and III follow under separate cover)
1--------------------------------------------------------------------------
A toast to John Norstad for single handedly frustrating the wackos
who generate viruses to hurt other people. Without your efforts, I
feel that viruses would become a plague. The way you rapidly respond
is incredible. If it were up to the commercial community, a virus
would negatively affect a lot of people before the fix ever came out.
Thank you for "solving" what I always considered to be an unsolvable
problem.
-peck@tecnet1.jcte.jcs.mil

I am happy to join to thank the author of
Disinfectant because I have been using it for a few years
by now and never been annoyed by viruses.

3--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the *best* thing about John is that he looks at what he does as a
mission. He uses the power of the medium to beat virus writers at their own
game. The fact that he views virus eradication as a public responsibility (and
the fact that SAM's updates never seem to install properly lately) and doesn't
charge for his efforts makes him even more worthy of the accolades.
-David Lawrence
-oltdavid@aol.com
4--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for a great program.
Your efforts (and those of any who helped you) are greatly appreciated by
all in our lab.
And the price is soooo reasonable!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely. Disinfectant is one of the best examples of altruism I know
of. I very much appreciate the work John N. has gone to in keeping
Disinfectant up-to-date not to mention making the program freely available
in the first place. His efforts have saved users untold amounts of money
and time (perhaps millions of $?). THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!

Dear John,
Thank you for Disinfectant and your excellent work (days and nights and
days of hard work and support !). I really appreciate your contribution to
Mac Universe and your support of thousands and thousands users, working
(safely !) with disinfectant. If internet is the ultimate expression of
democracy, you are certainly the best exemple (or model) of citizen of the
XXIth century ! (with moderators of Info-Mac and so many others !).
Thanks,

7--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Short, simple, and to the point- John, you have saved me from 3 viruses.
Not to mention the well written source you have made available, not only
from Disinfectant, but also Newswatcher. Folks like you give me hope.
Thanks.

I'm sending a quick note of thanks for all the great contributions you've made
to the Mac community. I know that you've been recognized on a number of
occasions for all your fine efforts, but I've never sent a note myself, and
Brandon's post convinced me that it's high time I did.
So, thanks for all your time and efforts. They are genuinely appreciated.
Best wishes,

I've always used disinfectant and I haven't had a virus problem in years.
This idea of a collective thank you is terrific and I am happy to participate.
Not to defuse the focus on disinfectant, but I also use and like/love
MacTCP Switcher, which I think John also wrote, so thanks twice!

I certainly don't want to flood his mailbox, but I completely agree that
Disinfectant is superb. If there were a top 10 list of best mac software of all
time, I would expect Disinfectant to be on it. The mac world owes John Norstad
and his colleagues a big round of thanks for their marvelous work.

>Come on, folks; I hope I can get at least 50 messages. Let's do it!
I think you got the decimal point too far to the left. 499 to go. It won't
take long!
John Norstad's contribution to the Mac community cannot be praised highly
enough. His unselfish devotion to the eradication of viral infections
places him in a class with few peers.
We may disagree on API details, but the discussions are never disagreeable.
Thanks, John! And may your attitude be cloned many thousand times.

John,
What you do with keeping disinfectant current and trouble free is a great
service to the macintosh community. Everyone knows that commercial software of
this type is available, but your freeware contribution speaks highly of the
pioineering spirit that makes the shareware concept a truely unique one in the
world of personal computers. Users who purchase commercial software without
taking the time to explore the world around them are missing out on the
plethora of software offerings that are available for free or a small fee on
the Mac. Fine software such as yours encourages more people to venture from
the safe haven of the local software store and explore the wonders of the
shareware system.
Thanks for doing such a professional job and keeping shareware alive.
-Anthony Trippe

16-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many thanks to John for all the wonderful work he's done. In the PowerPC
demo Apple gave on campus today, they verified that John will continue to
develop Disinfectant for the PowerPC, which makes me far more comfortable
upgrading. (And Apple knows it.)

When I first got a Mac my son "borrowed" some software from a friend. Next

To: John Norstad
Thanking John Norstad gives me great pleasure. Throughout my years as a
dedicated Macintosh user, John has worked often silently behind the scences
providing the best in virus protection. Many people have come and gone and
come again to the computer world. But Disinfectant has always been on the
top, ensuring the safety of my data and files. The program works! In the
highly virus-prone academic world, I have used Disinfectant's capabilities
often. Once, it saved my computer only minutes before a deadline on a
project worth over a hundred thousand US dollars. John proves that you "can
get a lot for nothing." I am continuously impressed with the speed at which
new versions are distributed and made available. Indeed, there are more
people to thank, all the supporters of Disinfectant who help. Certainly we
can give most of the credit to John, whose name shall live eternally in
computer world, across millions of computers. Few others will be able to
tell their grandchildren as great a great gift given to the world. I am
eternally grateful for his many years of continuous hard work and support.
Truly, life would have been hell without Disinfectant! Through John's work,
the world has breathed easier.
Thank you!

A big "Thank You" to John Norstad for his work and devotion in developing
and updating "Disinfectant". I downloaded my first copy of "Disinfectant"
when I was on an overseas project. Several of us on the project had purchased
Macs because of the flexible electrical requirements.
After downloading "Disinfectant" I tried it on my Mac. It identified oodles
of WDEF viruses. Those of us with Macs had exchanged floppy disks on many
occasions, so when I passed a copy along to an associate, it was no surprise
to find WDEF viruses on his machine and floppies also. After eradicating
the WDEF virus by rebuilding the desktop, he was able for the first time
to really use Multifinder and to overcome formating problems that kept
creeping into his Microsoft Word documents. He thanked me profusely for
sharing Disinfectant with him, but John Norstad deserves the real thanks.
Thanks John.

John's volunteer efforts on behalf of Disinfectant and NewsWatcher speak
volumes about the difference between the Mac and PC worlds!
Disinfectant gives me peace of mind---I never have to worry about viruses
on my machine!
I am at a private college with about 150 Macs, where I used to be in charge
of Academic Computing. It would be a great burden to us to have to pay $50
to $150 per machine for commercial antivirus software, plus paying for
updates---as we do for some pretty lousy antivirus software for PCs.
Moreover, I personally am also grateful for John's product NewsWatcher and
(out of gratitude for his work on Disinfectant) would _pay_ for that (I'm
presently using 2.0d11).

In my attempts to interest my sweetie in Macintosh computers, nothing
impressed her so much as The John Norstad/Disinfectant Story. Not Project
Gutenburg, the HyperCard wedding planner or even buying her own PowerBook
got her as interested as the idea of a really bright guy deciding he could
and would improve things for everyone in the Mac community because he was
able. And not only did he do it once, he keeps doing it. I recently caught

Great Idea! My little Mac Classic II has never been infected, but I know the
risk is there. I am very greatful that John Norstad is out there not only
being Paul Revere, but handing out the weapons for us to fight with.

I applaud the suggestion that the readers of Nympho-Mac Digest join
together to thank John Norstad for his continuing efforts to safeguard the
Apple-Macintosh community from computer-viruses. Chris Johnson, of course,
deserves to be praised in the same breath.
A Northwestern wizard named Norstad
makes the hearts of all Mac-users feel glad:
when nasties attack,
he's the man with the knack;
without him their lives would be ... well, bad!
In Texas a Johnson named Chris
pens an init that brings us great bliss.
No virus gets by
his unsleeping eye:
the gate shuts -- and good-bye crisis!

John, you already know that you've helped huge numbers of college and
university Mac labs stay within budget. You do the same for NPOs. At the Free
[Medical] Clinic of Greater Cleveland, three top administrators do their work
on underpowered Macs with ancient software, but, thanks to you, they have
excellent virus protection. [I volunteer my computing skills there.] That, of
course, frees more $ to serve the mostly indigent patients who rely on them. I
was going to say that if the IRS let you claim charitable contributions for all
the NPOs who use Disinfectant, you'd be a rich man, but you already are in the
way that counts most!

I have been a Mac "evangalist" for a while and people like John are the
reasons for my enthusiasm. They provide a great service (vital in fact) and
they do it promptly, cheerfully and still have a human nature to them (John
replied to my E-mail personally in less than 6 hours).
If the idea of the Mac was Steve Jobs then at the right hand of the creator
was John Norstad and his team.
Warm fuzzies to all, as this person cannot get enough credit in my books

John, thanks for a great program that has saved my butt at least twice! The
first time, a user brought in an infected game disk. The virus quickly spread
all over the organization through the network. It took a long time to clean
up the mess but Disinfectant did an fantastic job. The next time we caught an
infection from a service bureau and stomped it early due to the new (at that
time) Disinfectant INIT. Hats off!

If anyone in the Mac community deserves a toast, then I think you hit upon the
right one. John Norstad has certainly done us all a tremendous service, and
kudos are deserved.
My personal experience with the virus software first came after I got a
copy of a "magazine on disk" issue with WDEF A. Until then, viruses were
nothing to worry about. The following month, they addressed a letter to their
users, saying that the previous month's issue had virus on some of the copies.
I checked. Mine was one of them. At the time, I was running a 512K with dual
floppies. I couldn't see running the "WDEF Killer" the company sent on all
the floppies that were at risk. Worse yet, I had used some in my work machine
(never mind the attitude my employer took). Without knowing it, I had (within
a single month) managed to infect more than 75 floppy disks.
John Norstad's Disinfectant came to the rescue. A friend gave me a copy,
and I installed it on my home and work machines. It promptly caught all the
viruses and, for the next FOUR YEARS, continued to find the disks that I had
originally infected. I hope that I'm done, but Disinfectant remains vigilant.
As though this experience wasn't enough, a printer passed me another disk
after I gave him some typeset masters. Another virus was identified by
Disinfectant, and it killed yet another nasty beast.
Indeed, my thanks do go out to John Norstad -- he did a terrific job,
released a terrific product, and deserves terrific praise. What can you say
to a guy who gives you free security service for years? All I can say is, if
he's ever in Maryland, dinner's on me!
